About
Pigeon Waters Quarter Horse Ranch is owned and operated by Deborah Segeren; who has been involved with and supported the reining industry since 2006.
Although our competition horses; ‘JB Moonshine’ and ‘Leos Little Beaver’ have achieved show success in past years; it has been the importation of horses from the USA which have really put Pigeon Waters Quarter Horse Ranch in the spotlight.
There is no doubt that there are many exceptional Quarter Horse bloodlines in Australia; however in order to introduce some exciting new bloodlines a trip was made to the home of the American Quarter Horse – Texas, USA – during 2007.
A visit to Carol Rose Quarter Horses (the AmQHA’s All-Time Leading Breeder of Performance Horses) and Green Valley Ranch (one of the leading reining horse training and breeding facilities in the world) resulted in the purchase and importation of a ‘Lil Ruf Peppy’ filly; ‘Ruf Lil Renee’ and a ‘Shining Spark’ colt; ‘Shiney And Nu’.
While there were high hopes for these two horses; especially the gorgeous son of legendary performance horse sire ‘Shining Spark (USA)’; no one expected that ‘Shiney And Nu’ would achieve all that he did during 2009 – his first ever competitive season.
The start of the 2009 show season saw both horses entered in events at the Pacific Coast Reining Spectacular. ‘Ruf Lil Renee’ won the Horses 4 Years & Under event ridden by John Wicks while ‘Shiney And Nu’ won the Open Futurity ridden by Warren Backhouse.
The ultimate close to 2009 was when ‘Shiney And Nu’ partnered with his trainer and superior horseman, Warren Backhouse to take out the Opal Park Stud Gold Buckle Open Futurity at the RA 2009 Futurity & Continental Championship Show.
The ‘Shiney And Nu’ and Warren Backhouse partnership has continued with great results throughout 2010. The duo took out the NSWRHA 2010 State Championship Show Open Derby, the Q10 World Show Down Under Open Reining, the QRHA 2010 State Championship Show Open Reining and the NRHA 2010 Futurity & Continental Championship Open Derby!
These fantastic achievements resulted in ‘Shiney And Nu’ along with Warren Backhouse being selected to compete in the Open Reining Masters at Equitana 2010 held in Melbourne. The duo competed against some of the best horses and riders in the country and secured co-championship status with fellow reiner Martin Larcombe riding Smart Like Smart. While a run-off was an option to decide the overall winner it was decided to share the championship primarily due to the state of the surface which just wasn’t quite right for the reining horses to perform at their best.
At the end of 2010 the much anticipated very first crop of foals sired by ‘Shiney And Nu (imp)’ arrived ~ and they did not disappoint! Further details and photos can be seen on the PROGENY page.
Full details of all show results can be found on the ACHIEVEMENTS page.
